Frequently Asked Questions About Senior Care
It may be time to consider assisted living if your loved one is struggling with daily activities, medication management, safety concerns, or isolation. If you find yourself worrying often or providing constant hands-on help, an assisted living community can restore quality of life and peace of mind for everyone.Â
There are several types of senior care to consider depending on your loved one’s needs:
- Independent Living – For active seniors who want social connection and convenience without home maintenance.
- Assisted Living – For those who need help with daily tasks like medication, bathing, or meals.
- Memory Care – For individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia who need a safe, structured environment.
- Board & Care Homes – Smaller, home-like settings that provide personal attention and support.
- In-Home Care – For seniors who wish to remain in their own homes with caregiver support.
Both offer help with daily activities, meals, and supervision — the main difference is size and atmosphere.
- Assisted Living Communities are larger, often with 50+ residents, activity programs, and amenities.
- Board & Care Homes are smaller residential homes (typically 6 residents or fewer) offering more personal attention in a homelike setting.
The four most common ways families pay for senior care and assisted living are:
1.     Private Funds & Savings – The most common method. Families often use personal savings, retirement accounts, or proceeds from selling a home to cover monthly care costs.
2.     Long-Term Care Insurance – Some policies help pay for assisted living, memory care, or in-home care. Coverage depends on the policy terms and benefit limits.
3.     Veterans Aid & Attendance Benefit – Eligible veterans and surviving spouses can receive monthly financial assistance (up to about $2,700) to help pay for care.
We don’t process VA benefits directly, but Placement Helpers can connect you with local professionals who can help you start the application process.
4.     Medi-Cal (Medicaid) – For those who qualify financially and medically, Medi-Cal may cover some long-term or memory care services, primarily in skilled nursing settings.
Most assisted living and care homes include:
- Room and board
- Meals and snacks
- Housekeeping and laundry
- Personal care assistance (bathing, dressing, etc.)
- Medication management
- Activities and social programs
Some may charge additional fees for higher levels of care or private rooms.
Costs vary depending on location, care needs, and room type.
- Board & Care Homes: typically, $3,500–$6,000/month
- Assisted Living Communities: $4,000–$8,000/
month - Memory Care: $5,000–$9,000/month
Our advisors help families find safe, licensed options that fit within their budget.
Memory care communities are designed specifically for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia. They offer secure environments, structured activities, and staff trained in cognitive care — all to ensure safety and comfort while maintaining dignity.
In urgent cases — like hospital discharges — a move can happen in as little as 24–48 hours once the care assessment is completed. Your local advisor can coordinate everything quickly and safely from start to finish.
Start with a conversation. Your Placement Helpers advisor will learn about your loved one’s health, care needs, and budget, then provide personalized recommendations and schedule tours — all at no cost to your family.
All communities we refer to are licensed and vetted by our local advisors. We personally review their state compliance, caregiver training, and safety records to ensure quality and peace of mind.
Yes — as long as their care needs can be safely managed within the community’s license. If a higher level of care is needed, our advisors can help coordinate a smooth transition to a memory care or skilled nursing facility.
Then in-home care may be the best option. Our sister company, Alliance Home Care Service, provides caregivers who assist with personal care, companionship, meal prep, medication reminders, and more — allowing seniors to remain safely and comfortably at home.
While Placement Helpers doesn’t process VA Aid & Attendance applications directly, we can connect you with trusted local resources who specialize in helping veterans and their families start the application process.
