Timely Interventions for Depression Might Lower the Future Risk of Dementia

January 20, 2023

It’s well known and documented by the scientific community that depression is very often accompanied by other mental health conditions. It can also lead to more permanent mental health problems in the future. People who develop late-life depression & who have received treatment on time were reported to have had a lower risk of dementia over time than individuals left untreated.

Dementia is a disabling neurocognitive condition that mainly affects older adults. Depression has long been associated with an increased risk of dementia, and now a new study provides evidence that early treatment of depression could lower the risk of dementia in specific groups of patients. This is great news since there are a lot of people who suffer from dementia worldwide. No effective treatment for dementia exists, therefore identifying ways to help minimize or prevent dementia would help to lighten the burden of the disease.

Strategies to ameliorate the probabilities

Exercise

Exercise is a great way to reduce the risk of dementia. Regular exercise helps keep the brain active and sharp. It also reduces inflammation and increases blood flow throughout the body. Exercise is a great way to improve mental clarity and memory.

Sleep

Sleep is another great way to prevent dementia. When we sleep, our brains go through cycles of activity and rest. These cycles are called sleep cycles. If we don’t get enough sleep, our brain doesn’t have time to recover and can lead to cognitive decline.

Nutrition

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may help protect against Alzheimer’s disease. Fruits and vegetables provide antioxidants that may help fight free radicals in the brain. Antioxidants are substances that neutralize harmful molecules known as free radicals which cause damage to cells and DNA. Eating foods high in antioxidants may slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Stress reduction

Stress can increase the risk of dementia. Stress affects the brain and nervous system. It causes changes in the levels of hormones and neurotransmitters. Hormones and neurotransmitters control mood, emotions, behavior, and physical responses. Stress can affect how well the brain works.

Social engagement

Social engagement is another factor that can play a role in preventing dementia. Having social connections and participating in activities with others can help people stay mentally alert and engaged.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy can help people who have dementia. It can help people learn new skills and maintain their independence. It can also help people who have trouble walking or balance.

Even though there is no sure way to ensure that our health will always be optimal in the future. In this article we hope to give some insight into the possible ways to stay as healthy as possible, so that a happy and productive life will be possible well into old age.
