Veterans Benefits: Understanding VA Aid & Attendance

What is Aid & Attendance?

The Aid & Attendance benefit is an additional monthly payment added to the VA pension for qualified individuals who need:

  • Assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, or feeding
  • Care in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity
  • Confinement to bed due to illness
  • Limited eyesight (corrected visual acuity of 5/200 or less in both eyes)

This benefit is tax-free and can be used to cover costs associated with in-home care, assisted living, or nursing facilities.

2025 Aid & Attendance Benefit Rates

Effective December 1, 2024, the VA has updated the Maximum Annual Pension Rates (MAPR) for the Aid & Attendance benefit:

Single Veteran

$ 28,300 annually
  • $2,358 monthly

Married Veteran

$ 33,548 annually
  • $2,795 monthly

Surviving Spouse

$ 18,187 annually
  • $1,515 monthly

Two Veterans

Married to Each Other (Both Eligible)
$ 44,886 annually
  • $3,740 monthly

Note: These rates are subject to annual adjustments based on cost-of-living increases.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Aid & Attendance benefit, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Military Service

Veterans must have served at least 90 consecutive days of active duty, with at least one day during a recognized wartime period.Ā 

Age or Disability

  • Be 65 years or older, or
  • Be permanently and totally disabled.
  • Financial Need

    Net Worth Limit: As of 2025, the net worth limit is $159,240, excluding a primary residence, personal effects, and a vehicle.

    Medical Necessity

  • Require assistance with activities of daily living,
  • Be bedridden,
  • Reside in a nursing home due to mental or physical incapacity, or
  • Have limited eyesight.
  • How to Apply?

    Applying for the Aid & Attendance benefit involves the following steps:

    Examination for Housebound Status or Permanent Need for Regular Aid and Attendance.

    • Medical records detailing the need for assistance.
    • Proof of income and net worth.
    • Discharge papers (DD-214).
    • Mail the completed form and documents to the appropriate VA Pension Management Center.
    • Alternatively, apply in person at a local VA regional office.
